Part A Question #3

Take a look at St. Clair Colleges website. In relation to visuals, what would you propose to St. Clair College to improve/enhance this new website to effectively market to potential incoming local domestic students. Please provide three (3) recommendations and justify your answer with detailed reasoning. (9 Marks)

Each of these recommendations is for the St. Clair College website’s homepage (https://www.stclaircollege.ca/

The first recommendation I would make for the St. Clair College website homepage is changing the first image featured.

This section should be a rotating carousel of images showcasing students in spacious classrooms, students working internships, sports teams, and other images that potential students would be excited to see. A rotating carousel will allow the images to appeal to more and different types of students who are potentially interested in attending St. Clair College. The current image doesn’t depict the experience of attending St. Clair College – it isn’t exciting or memorable. As the first thing a reader will see, its important to grab their attention right away with captivating images that will encourage them to keep looking through the website.

The second recommendation I would make for the St. Clair College website is changing the layout of the carousel on the homepage.

Rather than having the links in a rotating carousel, they should all be laid out in organized columns and always showing. For example, a layout like this:

The links should also include icons or images that relate to the link. 40% of people respond better to visual information than plain text – including an icon or image will make readers more likely to click the link and read more on the website. The new layout will also make the content easier to follow for readers and help them decide which links are important to them.

The final recommendation I would make for the St. Clair College website homepage is including images above the listed events.

As mentioned previously, people respond better to visual information than plain text, so including an image with the event will make readers more likely to click the link and read more. Additionally, including an image with the event will make it more memorable for the readers who don’t choose to click the link and read more. Readers will still be likely to remember the information and event with the use of a photo.
